We can hardly believe it, but this month marks our 10th anniversary of living in this house.
My parents have never moved since they married almost 50 years ago, so I always lived in the same house growing up. After marrying, we moved around a bit, but this is the longest I've ever lived in a house other than my childhood home. My husband's dad is a pastor, so they moved around throughout his childhood and our current home is the one he's lived in the longest in his life. So, it's quite a milestone for many reasons!
As I've known this date was approaching, I thought it would be fun to share some photos with you of the progress of the house since we've owned it. We're only the second owners of this house, and the previous owners did an amazing job of including great "bones", quality materials and details as they built it, but it's almost 25 years old now so of course we've updated and changed some things to be more to our taste.
I'll give you a tour room by room of the house when we moved in, some in between photos, and a look at where we are now. Some of the "before" photos are from the MLS listing with the previous owner's belongings and aren't great quality, but they're good enough that you get the idea. I won't say any of these are "after" photos, because if you've read my blog for any time at all you know that things are always changing around here!
The first thing we did when we moved in was to remove all of the carpet and bleach the concrete floors (they were nasssssty... pet stains). We actually lived with the cement floors for about a month while we worked on other things, got semi-settled, and decided what we wanted. So, most of these "before" photos are really messy, I wasn't blogging yet and obviously didn't think about taking empty house pictures. Boy, has blogging changed my perspective on how I document life!
Alright, grab a beverage and get ready to scroll. There are a lot of photos in this post, but I won't narrate much more. I think the photos speak for themselves!
EXTERIOR
Before- Green shutters and door, (dormant) ivy covering left hand front flowerbed and garage walls
After- New paint on trim, doors, and shutters, new landscaping
This was so interesting for me to pull these photos together. Most rooms ended up two makeovers over the course of our 10 years here. I honestly believe I've been working to find MY style (not what I thought our house should look like according to area trends or trying for a "grown up" style) and figure out what works best for our family. I still have so much to learn, but it's nice to see how my photography has improved over the years, too.
ENTRY
DINING ROOM
LIVING ROOM
KITCHEN
Creamy glazed cabinets, enlarged island, new counters and appliances, makeshift backsplash,
no wallpaper!
There are a few rooms where I stripped wallpaper and then textured the walls. In hindsight, I sort of wish I hadn't textured some of those places so I could do wallpaper now.
Crisp white cabinets, subway tile backsplash, and pendants added.
Lots of pendant switches! ;)
BREAKFAST NOOK
If you've followed me from the beginning, you might remember the Breakfast Nook looking like this:
POWDER BATH
OFFICE/BONUS ROOM
MASTER BEDROOM
We removed that built in tv cabinet on the left. It bugged me that it wasn't centered and we didn't really need it for storage. Closing up that wall gave us so many more furniture and design options.
Did anyone else jump on board the "Restrained Gold" paint color craze? Oh my...
BOY'S ROOM
This room doesn't actually look like this anymore, he wanted to go back to a loft bed (sniff). It's been in limbo for a looong time and is on my list to get squared away when summer starts!
GIRL'S ROOM
LAUNDRY ROOM
BACK PATIO
The house isn't the only thing that's changed in 10 years (sniff sniff, boo hoo!)...
I've never shared our Master Bath which desperately needs a major overhaul, or the kids' bath which needs a refresh. And, one of the rooms I did show you is already totally redecorated in my head- I'll get to it some day! So, there's still plenty to do here.
Thanks for sharing this walk down memory lane with me!

ReplyDeleteWhat a great 10 years!!! Love every evolution of every space!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm obsessed with all of the send products. I just moved into my house and it's encouraging to see what ten years and really finding your own personal style can do. If you ever decide to sell just leave it all
ReplyDeleteI've textured walls too and years later wanted to paper them. The solution is prepping with "blank stock" first, which is a heavy white paper that is applied like wallpaper but is hung horizontally. It covers the texture and gives you a flat, even surface without vertical seams. You get a fresh smooth surface and then can wallpaper over it to your hearts content.<3
ReplyDeleteOh wow, I've never heard of that! That would DEFINITELY be easier than sanding down the texture!
DeleteThe transformations are amazing!! Lots of hard work -- but, with such beautiful results. Your entire home is vibrant and inviting. Congratulations on your 10 year anniversary.
ReplyDeleteLoved to see the transformation! You have such a good taste!
ReplyDeleteAny time at all you know that things are always changing around here!sell
