I've had my eyes open for a new sofa table for a while, and a few weeks ago the right one showed up on Craigslist. It was in great condition, but the stain had a very reddish tone.
Sticking with my go-to color for furniture, I used Rustoleum's Gloss Black pre-mixed enamel paint and the Homeright Finish Max paint sprayer to get a new finish. LOVE the sprayer by the way, I'll tell you more about it in a later post. The paint is super shiny and reflective, and I love the corner details in the piece. If you're like me and consider Emily A. Clark to be one of your favorite bloggers, this table might look familiar. Just a week or so after Emily posted about hers, I found this one listed in my town. After arranging to go see it, I remembered her post and discovered that it was the same table. Bonus!
So, when the drying time was up and the paint was cured, I played with accessories for my new table. Nothing is new, I used what I had and pulled things from other spots around the room or from storage.
Look #1 Casual Summer
I consider this to be a good, "everyday" look. Fresh clippings abundant in summer, some pieces with texture, a favorite photo, and some blue and white pieces for color.
Look #2 Neutral Beachy
Look #3 Anything Goes
I pulled some of my favorite things like my DIY lacquered boxes, and included plenty of color.
Styling Tips:
Generally when styling a table, I try to add something living (plant or flowers), something natural with texture (wood bowl, twig balls, wooden lamp, shells, woven baskets), something shiny, fill in with a sculptural piece (white bust, birdcage, blue and white pieces) and finish off with a small accessory or two (magnifying glass, clock, DIY gold urchin). Books are almost always included, too. They're perfect for adding height to items if needed. Oh, and although I didn't here, I very often use a tray to corral items as well.
I'm not sure which look will stay, it's actually already different than any of those three (I had to put everything back that I swiped from other places!). I stopped in Homegoods at just the right time the other day and found a pair of pretty new lamps,
so I'm trying to decide for sure where those will stay for now. I hope to show you a little summer tour next week!

ReplyDeleteBefore I forget, did you put any type of protectant on the top of the table? Of course, I love the black! :) I have a table I need to paint but no sprayer. Each of your displays are beautiful ~ I think my favorite is #3. I seem to always go for the color! The lamps are wonderful too. Great styling, as usual!

ReplyDeleteThey all look amazing! But my fave is the casual summer - yup a bit biased with the blue and white against your fabulous black console! Your tips are excellent as well, and I try to incorporate much of what you mentioned on my console as well.I'm on a hunt of a new and bigger console since my old one is small (got it for a steal though on clearance at jcp). Wish me luck!
