WANTED...SWEET DREAMS

I'm getting closer to making a concentrated effort on redecorating my master bedroom.  One thing we know for sure, my husband's only request is that we switch from a Queen sized bed to a King.

So, mattress shopping is in our near future.  Now, I consider myself a pretty savvy shopper, but we are NO GOOD at choosing mattresses!  When we first married almost 19 years ago, we bought the best mattress our $350 could get, and it lasted almost 10 years.  Since then, we've been through 4 other mattress sets.  We purchased a couple of them at Sam's, and returned the first set after a few months because it didn't hold up well and we both rolled towards the middle.  The next set wasn't much better, so after a time we went to a "real" mattress store and the salesman convinced us to buy a mattress that "never needed flipping."  After a short time, there were definite impressions that we could do nothing about because we couldn't flip the mattress over to even them back out.  Our current mattress is just ok, but it's time for something new.

Shopping for a mattress is SO hard...one can't fully try it out and know how it will be in the long run while lying on it in the store in front of everyone for 2 minutes.  And, how do you find a good one that won't cost a small fortune?  And, how do you choose between a bajillion features and choices of material?

Life in Grace

So, my wise friends, I need your recommendations. Any suggestions in choosing a new mattress?  Brand?  Material?  Anything I should know about King size?

Would you like to comment?

  1. Please share any advice you get...we are long overdue for a new mattress. I often wake up feeling like i did a work out before bed. good luck! :) love those images

  2. We spent a good bit of money on the mattress we are currently sleeping on. It is a pillow top. After a short time problems became evident. It is wonderful by myself so I sleep well when my husband is out of town. When he's home, I roll towards him. I have to build a wall of pillows to keep me from going in the hole. Another thing, it's hot! I've seen now that they advertise cool fabric technology so I'd check into that.

  3. Do not buy the euro top. It is next to impossible to find sheets with an 18" drop. We did buy a full sized mattress about 7 years ago at the Denver Mattress Company (the store brand, they do carry others) and I have been so pleased with the quality of that one. To be honest it was so cheap ($400) I didn't expect much but it has held up better than our $1200 set from the furniture store.

  4. We just recently purchased a king size bed for ourselves. I LOVE it. Now, I can't say anything about the long hall because we've only had it for a little over a year, but so far so good. We actually bought ours at Dillards. They don't have a huge selection, but honestly that just overwhelms me. But, they did have the top brands. They were moving out last years models so we got a great deal - much less than we would have paid at one of the "mattress stores" for the exact same mattress. Good luck!

  5. Great post. We are looking to convert to a king sized mattress and I could agree more about the overwhelming amount of options.

  6. I'm probably no help, we have a Sealy Posturepedic (I'm sure there are many types) it was expensive, but we've been really happy with it. I think it depends on what's comfortable to you, a friend just bought one that was high end with a bajillion amazing reviews and took it back after a couple months. LOVE the first bedroom!!

  7. Jen,we purchased a queen size Tempur-Pedic mattress three years ago. It's fabulous! My sister has had hers for the past ten years. I just checked their website and they are offering the same deal my sister received:
0% APR financing with 48 months to pay.

  8. Once you go KING, you never go back. ;)

Hi, Jen! I'm glad I stopped in b/c naturally I love throwing my two cents in. Unfortunately, if you take my two cents, your new mattress will cost you much more than that. Upwards of two grand, actually.

We updgraded from a Queen (saggy) pillowtop to a King Temper Pedic about 5 years ago. BEST $2K I've ever spent. I can't tell you how many times I've crawled in bed at night and literally said out loud, thank you Jesus for this bed. Lol. (Really!) It takes a little bit to get used to the new feel, because it's not that spa-like fluffy, cushy feel like a pillow-top mattress, but as you get settled into it, it wraps you like a glove. I will say that being a very petite person, I don't squoosh down quite as much as my hubby, lol, but it really is a comfortable bed...for us. Some people love it, others not so much. I love that I don't flip and flop in it and we can get in and out of bed without disturbing the other.

Both my boys have one, too, and my daughter is jealous. She slept on Preston's one night. She loooved it and complained that SHE didn't have one. Poor thing.

We went through several disappointing pillow-top beds that just eventually sagged (even though they weren't supposed to). I know the Temper Pedics have gone up since we bought it and honestly, had we NOT bought it then, we couldn't afford it now.

Hope you figure it out. There are way too many options out there and it's a really important purchase. Let us know what you decide (as if I doubted you would. ;)

  9. Hi jeniffer, you will be so glad to make the switcht to a king, we absolutely love it, and ever since I had my second, I got so used to sleeping with a pillow in the middle, and my husband does not end up on the floor. The only advise I have is to not be shy when you go shopping, make sure you try it out. Lay on it, sit on it, have the kids bounce on it. We have a non reversible pillow top, yes, it's soft, but it's way too deep for regular sheets, you will have a hard time finding a fitted sheet that fits. My son has a temper pedic, I personally don't like it, it feel a bit hard, and it gets very hot at night. Good luck.

  10. I highly recommend the tempurpedic mattress. A couple of years ago, we were in desperate need of a new one because our crummy pillow top ( that cost $600) was making my back hurt so bad that I could barely get out of bed in the morning. It had those indentations and I kept falling into the middle. I BEGGED him for a tempurpedic! He didn't want to spend the money on one but I talked him inot it. I believe we got a medium firm one, not the softest, and not the most firm. It took a couple of weeks to break it in and I was growing afraid that we had made a huge mistake. It was delivered in the middle of January and was frozen, literally hard as a rock. Anyway after 2-3 weeks of breaking it in, I fell in love! I love it so much, and my back pain is completely gone!

  11. There is no doubt in my mind that you should, if you can, purchase a Select Comfort Sleep Number bed. Each of you have your own remote and can make your side as hard or as soft as you wish. We have had ours for at least 20 years and it is as good as the day we purchased it. It may be a little pricy but in the long run is the best deal on the market. It's a wonderful and comfortable mattress. In over 20 years we have not had a single problem with the mattress! Judy M.

  12. Oooooh a king! How exciting. A must have!
It's interesting to read about all these different mattresses, since it's kind of a big and important purchase.
We have a Stearns and Foster pillow top king and love it. We bought it when I was ginormously pregnant with one of our kids - and you know how a pregnant lady can get. Cranky & uncomfortable…..I think my husband would have paid a million dollars for that mattress!!
Only thing is it IS hard to find deep sheets - ours require 20". But the pillow top is on both sides which elongates it's life, and it's sooooooo comfortable. We love our bed more than any nice hotel bed we've ever slept on!

  13. I feel for you! Just an fyi ~ eons ago, I had a queen size that I purchased for myself after my divorce. Loved it! However, a good friend that works for Sealey called and advised they were having a huge clearance sale at the warehouse and did I want a king size set for $75? Yes, $75 for mattress and box springs!! I had less than 10 min to make a decision but I said, of course! (I'd been a king size lover for years!) I gave the fairly new queen set to my mother and fell in love with the Sealey set. I had it for almost 15 years and was still in great shape. When I moved here, all the king size bedroom furniture was given away. It wouldn't fit and I was really tired of it. Anyway, I didn't feel comfortable giving the mattress/box springs to the couple along with the furniture but they wanted it. It was clean, no stains and they're still using it! :)

That set was a pillow top and could be turned. The queen set I have now is the same and it's fantastic! You need deep fitted sheets but everyone sells them now anyway.

I wish you the best in making a decision!

  14. Mattress sales people are going to be furious with me, but my husband and I bought a Select Comfort (now called Sleep Number bed) 20 years ago and it's still awesome. The inside air chambers come with a lifetime guarantee, so the one time that the mattress started a slow leak, we called the 1-800 number and had a new mattress on our doorstep within 24 hours. I highly recommend them.

  15. I will put in my $.02 worth. As a professional dog-sitter, I have the opportunity to sleep in many different beds, while staying in my client's homes. Many times, I have no idea what kind/brand of mattress I am sleeping on, but I can tell you that the one I am always aware of, and the one I always say is the most comfortable is a Tempurpedic brand. As someone else said, there is a definite adjustment period as this mattress feels very different when first laying down. I would agree with the less tossing and turning through the night, (but my opinion may be tempered by the giant, 85lb dog sleeping next to me)!! One other comment...at one home where the owners have a Tempurpedic, they always insist that I not try to re-make the bed after I have laundried the bedding. The owner always says she will ask her husband to help her re-make the bed, as the mattress is so heavy and difficult to manipulate. Just something to think about, and I would include the brand in my research if I were in the market for a new mattress. Good Luck!

  16. TEMPURPEDIC!!!! And yes, once you have a king you will never go back. We are on year 8 of our TEMPURPEDIC. I can barely sleep anywhere else. I have been pregnant with triplets twice and this bed, while not easy to roll around in, gave me the best sleep ever. Much better than when I ended up in hospital beds for the bed rest. :). And I spent some time in a sleep number in a Ronald mc Donald house......my opinion, go with the tempurpedic!!!!

  17. Tempurpedic is the way to go. Although it seems a lot at the beginning, it's worth it in the long run. I bought mine in 2006 when I was pregnant and I still love it today. No indentations or sagging or anything!! It's like brand new. I've also heard good things about sleep number, but it's basically an air mattress with a pillow top...

  18. I don't know if they still sell mattresses but I bought mine at the W Hotel site - best mattress ever and has lasted for years!

  19. Funny my hubby and i are in the process of getting a new mattress too. The last mattress we bought is a Temperpedic. 2500.00 . We both have bad backs and we wanted a really good mattress. Well it is 6 years later and each of our sides have permanent sags in them. It is aweful. I wake up with back spasms almost everyday. your not supposed to flip it and to be honest, the sucker is so heavy we probably couldn't anyways. And it really keeps your body heat warm. That doesn't help when your already going thru night sweats hormonaley(sp) anyways. I do know we will not spend that kind of money again. In fact i am buying a mattress that is super firm and 500.00 . it had good reviews and i figure anything is better then what we have now . And if i was Superwoman, i would throw my old mattress out the window. lol.

  20. Let me add at first I loved our Tempurpedic. But after 6 years so very disappointed. The sags our big. And we are not huge people. and i thought it would of lasted at least 10 years for the price.

  21. I would recommend Shiffmann mattresses. They are wonderful! Also, if you have allergies they are great as they don't have all those chemicals to off gas. They are made in the US, they have many price points. Also, they udually have a big sale in the spring. They don't need to advertise because once you sleep in it or hear from a friend about them you will understand its the best mattress.

  22. We bought a sleep number bed about 10 years ago and love it.

  23. Spot on with getting a king set! You will love it. Anyway no matter what brand of mattress you buy always ask for a "comfort guarantee". Not all stores offer this but it allows you to return the mattress if you don't like it. Its a guarantee usually good for about 1 month. Believe me it could save you a lot of money, heartache and back pain!! I would not shop anywhere that would not back up their merchandise with this!!

  24. Hi Jennifer! I hate mattress shopping more than any other kind!We had a Sealy King. For the past 8 years my husband slept on an expensive Temperpedic (alone due to snoring!) that was a full/queen and too small for 2 large people. He had back issues that were almost alleviated after sleeping on this mattress. He lost weight and stopped snoring so now we share a King size Sleepy's Mattress version of the temperpedic which was over half less and my husband says he sleeps the same in the new one.

I had to get used to turning in it but you don't turn as much anyway because you are sleeping more soundly. It also has cool gel technology which the over 50 women crowd appreciates so it isn't as hot sleeping as the regular temperpedic.

Ours isn't quite as heavy as the standard temperpedic so making it is a breeze. The cost was $1597 and we used our existing box spring as it was in good shape. Still expensive for a mattress alone but worth EVERY penny! I love it. Now I'm searching for the perfect pillow!!!lol

    Good Luck
    Sincerely, Jeannette

  25. I am pretty sure that the mattress I slept on through high school was 30 years old! I definitely sank like a rock into the middle of it. Talk about bad childhood! Well when I married my sweetheart at the VERY young age of 20, we knew spending the $$$$ on a good mattress was the way it had to be. We chose a pillow top queen and hardly ever flip it, we still talk about our cozy mattress to this day, we are going on our 14 yr anniversary and mattress is still the best $1000 we ever spent 14 years ago!!!!
ps. We bought our kids decent mattresses too, we just don't skimp in that department :)

    Good luck!

  26. Jennifer! I love your style and have so enjoyed your blog! We bought a Sleep Number bed a few years ago and my husband loves it. It's nice to be able to adjust each side individually. I like it "ok"...my back likes it, but the idea of sleeping in a soft, "cushie" fluffy wonderland is lost with this mattress...so here's my advice. If you decide on this mattress, go with the pillow top or whatever form of fluffiness they now offer, you'll be happier I think! Have fun!

  27. Believe it or not, Bethany Schools are having a mattress sale as a fundraiser. From the info on facebook, this is the second time they have done this, and it has been very successful. You might check it out. If it is a good thing, the profit from your purchase will support a fine school instead of building bigger and better showrooms for a mattress company.

  28. Hey Jen, The City Matress Company may be a great place to start. They make their own mattresses and they last a very long time. In our 42 years of marriage I think we are just on our 3rd mattress. We have a pillow top right now and have had it for at least 20 years and it is still good.We did not got it at 19th and Portland. 29. Hey Jennifer! I'd try looking for a memory foam mattress at BedInABox.com. I've had one for a few years and it's great :)
