It's time for another installment in my Just One Thing series, where I focus on simple ways to make your life just a little bit better. Whether it be trying something new that you might not have considered before, or finally getting around to doing that chore you've been putting off, these ideas are meant to be quick and easy!
When's the last time you've thought about your ironing board cover? I'll let you in on one of my dirty little secrets...
Mine was bad. Like B-A-D! I'm almost sure it's original to the house...which is almost 20 years old. And after seeing that photo I'm sure you won't disagree. It needed to be changed when we moved in almost 7 years ago, and it's one of those things that just kept getting overlooked.
The main problem was the size. This is the first house where we've been fortunate to have a built-in ironing board. When I would actually remember to shop for a new cover, they never had the right size in the store. And, an Amazon search yielded very boring or too expensive options in the size I needed. So, on a whim, I picked up a standard size cover at TJ Maxx and tried it out. The smaller tapered end fit perfectly, but the other end was a bit too long.
To solve the problem, I whipped out my scissors and trimmed off the end.
Then, to secure it, I put a few staples on the bottom of the board on that end, and I wedged the cut end under the end of the board and put several staples in the side of the board to secure it there.
I realize that covers are meant to be removed and washed, but let's face it...I used a ratty cover for 7 years, so if I need to pop out a few staples once in a blue moon, wash it, and staple it back I'm ok with that.

It's amazing how much more fun, and easy, ironing is when you have a cute fluffy pad instead of a dirty, ratty barely-covered hard board!
A new (or washed) ironing board cover...Just One Thing to make your life better!
cute!! I'm with you, it's fixing the small things that bug you - makes life so much better!
ReplyDeleteHow cute!! I have a really fun ironing board cover that I ordered from an Etsy person. Love it. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat post! Our ironing board cover was in a sad state also...for far too long. Just picked one up two weeks ago at World Market. Funny how we let some things go! Jane
ReplyDeleteThat's the prettiest ironing board cover I've seen!!
ReplyDeleteI hear ya! I've been ironing on my hamper that has an ironing board top but it could use a cute makeover ;) xo Kristin
ReplyDeleteGood idea. My board right now looks about as bad as your 'before' only with a big rip right down the middle. Oops. Guess its time for a new one.
ReplyDeleteHa! Looks like I'm in good company with my sad ironing board cover! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm right there with you - my ironing board cover is 100% pathetic. And I've had it forever and never, ever washed it. Glad I'm not the only one. Love your new cover - so fun!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness Jennifer!! I adore this!! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who has never washed their ironing board cover!!
ReplyDeleteOh goodness, how I need to do this same thing! Great motivation :)
ReplyDeleteI love it! 2 things I hate to do ~ dust and iron. This type cover would make the latter more fun. :)

That is SO stinkin fun - a zebra print to jazz up a dreaded chore :) :)
ReplyDeleteBy the way I have never ever washed our ironing board cover! I know it's washable but - it never even occurred to me to wash it!
cute cover! I love little changes that make a big difference! :)
ReplyDeleteI need a new ironing board cover too! Especially when I want to do some sewing tutorials and some of the tutorial involves showing how to press a part of the project! I change mine when I remember to buy a new one or if I break down and make one so it's out of fabric that looks ok in photos!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I'm due for a change, too. Fun covers really do make ironing so much better.
ReplyDeleteI FINALLY did this this year too! I had the thinnest, ugliest cover ever - and it never did fit right. It was always sliding off. But the new one is SO pretty - it makes me happy just to look at it! Kudos to your new cover!
ReplyDeleteHOW'S MY IRONING BOARD? I don't think you want to know or maybe you do LOL…It looks like your before picture too. Love how you changed yours. No I feel the need to change mine too.
ReplyDeleteMine looks similar to yours still! Your giving me ideas Jennifer, lovin' your update!
ReplyDeleteOf course the iron board is amazing, but i think those picture frames behind it are the most beautiful things in this photos. Just love it.
ReplyDeleteImpressive ironing board which you have been shared. Thanks for posting it.
