Hello there! Thank you all for your sweet wishes for Caleb's birthday. Other than half of our family being sick and not being able to attend the party, he had a great weekend!
Today I have my first project of the new year to share with you. In those lazy days between Christmas and New Year's, I broke out the paint brush! I've wanted to add something to the backs of the shelves in the living room, and with the busy pattern of the curtains I decided to just paint them a solid color.
I tried a color I've been seeing pop up a lot lately, "Urbane Bronze" by Sherwin Williams. It's a rich charcoal. Dark, but not a stark black.
I really like the color because a few of the black frames and accessories I have still stand out from the background (even though it's hard to tell with the lighting in the photos). See the fun sparkles from the left-out-from-Christmas disco ball?
I kept most of the
styling the same except for that cubby with the lamp in it. The only
outlet in that whole corner of the room is in that section of the
bookshelf, so I like to remove a few shelves to accommodate a lamp. It appears to blend in, but when the lamp is turned on that black shade shows up just fine. A
tall cloche and picture hung on the shelf back help to fill the space
next to the lamp.
This is how they looked after we bought the house-
About a year and a half ago I painted them "Divine White" by Sherwin Williams-
And today.
While I was at it, I changed out all of the knobs along that wall to these little pretties from Hobby Lobby.
Tomorrow I'll show you a few other ideas for making your bookshelves a little more interesting.
Your shelves look amazing and I love the color you used!

Very nice! And those knobs - love them! I might have to make a trip to Hobby Lobby soon, but first I should find a place to put them :)
ReplyDeleteLove it-nice job!!! I guess I really love it because I used that same color for above the fireplace and the inside of my book shelves too.
ReplyDeleteNice taste !
Stunning! I love the color and the accessories. :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm in love. I've been wanting to do the same to my family bookshelves and I think this has sealed the deal for me. ;) Looks fabulous!!!!
ReplyDeleteSolid color does look very elegant with the curtain. Nice decision on color.
ReplyDeleteI loved them before, but this is my favorite!! That color is fabulous ~ love your gold accessories against it, and how fun is that lamp shade!
ReplyDeleteWow, what an impact! I love the color. The knobs are wonderful too. You have such great style.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever painted fiberboard? I want to do something with a book shelf I have but not sure if the paint would adhere.

I love it! I really wish I had some built ins so that I could do the same :( but sadly, I don't, so I will just have to drool over yours.
ReplyDeleteYou are a bookshelf artist! Updating mine is on my 2013 project list and now I'm inspired!
ReplyDeleteThey look better and better each time! I am a big fan of the amperstand in the second stage though.
ReplyDeleteI love that feather lamp! So cute! Great job!
ReplyDeleteLove this color on the back of your built-ins! I am in the process of painting a dresser the same color - it's gorgeous and not one I think I'll tire of quickly! I just may have to try it out on our built-ins as well! Thanks for sharing:)
ReplyDeleteVERY pretty!
ReplyDeleteOooooo I love it!!! That color is ah-mazing!
ReplyDeleteI love this! I also used Urbane Bronze in my kitchen for the cabinets. I love that color.
ReplyDeleteThat lamp is a piece of art! That paint took it from good to great!
